Sylvestercross Soest!

At the 31st of december, 4 brave Gauls took part at the Sylvestercross in Soest, the second race of the Dutch National Crosscountry League: Eline, Marissa and Willem at the short distance and Casper at the long distance. At both events, a very strong field of competitors was promised, and so, the Gauls were ready to give it all for once more in 2018. However, not only the fellow competitors would be a challenge at the Sylvestercross, the course of the race also proved to be a huge challenge in itself: at the end of each lap, the infamous sand dune had to be conquered, on which the start and finish were located.

Willem was the first one to come into action, ready to defend the honour of the board at the men’s short distance. Fearlessly, he sprinted into the woods together with 75 others, to cover a distance of 3,2 kilometers, which he managed to do just within 13 minutes: a great performance on this heavy course! Moreover, former Gaul Marco did a great job by taking the 16th place in this race. Next, it was Eline and Marissa’s turn to run the same course, at the women’s short distance. Directly from the start, both of them clearly showed that they were aiming for high classifications! After a very fast first lap, they both did the best they could in the long second lap to keep the pace as high as possible, which proved to be a difficult job after climbing the sand dune for the first time. However, both did a great job, and in the end, their efforts were rewarded with the 8th spot for Eline and, shortly after her, a 10th spot for Marissa. Former Gaul Yorma also proved to be in great shape by taking the 12th place. Finally, Casper started at the long distance, which would lead the runners over no less than six laps, including six climbs of the sand dune. After a quick start, initially he seemed to be running a good race. However, since a few days Casper had already shown why some people tend to call him a ‘coughing sea lion’, and halfway during the race he had to quit due to illness. Luckily, there was only little time to be disappointed, as the ‘oliebollen’ and fireworks were already prepared: time to look forward to a great, purple and athletics-filled 2019!

Auwjaorscross Oirschot

On the second to last day of 2018 John and Niek participate in the long distance cross in Oirschot. Mirna and Marvin started the short distance cross a bit later.
With soft weather and little rain of the recent days, the almost flat course was in very good condition. Actually a bit too dry, without mud no real cross, they say. Spikes were therefore not really necessary.
After having completed a small round, John and Niek started the four big rounds, which made the long cross 10120 meters long. Due to a number of painful stitches in Niek’s foot, he unfortunately could not finish the race and stopped just past halfway. John, on the other and, did a good job and enjoyed the well-deserved ‘oliebollen’ afterwards. Former member Michael took a nice second place overall.
Not exactly at 12.00, but soon later, Mirna and Marvin started their two small rounds, together 2120 meters of racing through the woods. In his brand new spikes, Marvin did his utmost to maintain himself in the rankings and finished in 7th place in the middle of the pack. Mirna, who, together with Anne-Marijke, represented team ‘Regular shoe’, went into battle for a few extra points for the club classification.
Tomorrow the Sylvestercross in Soest will take place, and then it’s finally time for New Year’s Eve. On to a healthy and sporty 2019!
