Marathon Eindhoven 2018!

[English below]

Last weekend, the city was dominated by Eindhoven’s biggest running event of the year: the Marathon! Many Gauls had trained for this event for months, and were fully motivated to attack their personal bests on the 5km, 10km, half marathon or full marathon, to make their debut on one of these distances, or simply to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of this great event.

On Saturday night, the event started off with the 10km Run By Night, at which 5 Gauls would start. Brand-new Gauls Haris and Adomas competed for the first positions in the race, and finished on the 8th and 16th place with strong times of 38:15 and 40:04 respectively. Frank set a time of 43:11, with which he showed to be right on the track back after some long injuries. Also, 2 Gaulic ladies faced the dark miles: Elke ran a time of 51:04 and Inge just managed to beat the 1-hour boundary with a strong time of 59:33!

On Sunday morning, an equal number of Gauls got to the start of the AON City Run, which measured a distance of 5km. While Nitin and Casper were just on their way for their full marathon, Hannah, Awital, Bouke, Marvin and Wing tried to cover this distance as quickly as possible. Bouke was the first one to reach the finish line in a time of 19 minutes and 44 seconds, followed by Hannah in a strong time of 22:08. Marvin and Wing both got far beyond their comfort zones as technical athletes, but made a strong impression anyway. This surely also applied to Awital, who even made her debut for Asterix! After everyone had crossed the finish line, the long wait for both marathon runners began. Casper had a really hard time during the last 7 kilometers of his very first marathon, but managed to proudly cross the finish line after 2 hours and 50 minutes while carrying the Asterix flag. Nitin ran a very strong race, especially while considering the warm and heavy circumstances, and ran a fantastic personal best of no less than 16 minutes (!) with a great time of 3:37:42!

While the temperature slowly reached its peak of 26 degrees, the largest group of Gauls of the day started at the half marathon: 11 Gauls went on their way to face 21 long and warm kilometers. Michael wisely adjusted his target time early on in the race, ultimately bringing him to the 7th place overall in a time of 1:13:36, which was a personal best of 2 minutes. Tom also got a really hard time and had to take it easier halfway through the race, ultimately missing his personal best by just a few seconds with a time of 1:22:52. Henrik, who had run the full marathon last year, and John both ran very steadily to times of 1:33 and 1:36, soon followed by almost-Gaul Britt, who finished in the top-50 of women with a very strong time of 1:41:23! Ricky ran a good time of 1:48:39, and despite the heat Iris managed to just beat the 2-hour boundary, just behind Vera who ran a very strong debut with 1:57:19. Dino and Ramon had a very hard day, but both managed to reach the finish line with a lot of perseverance. Sandra-Anna very bravely started her half marathon despite many weeks of injuries, but she had to give up the fight, sadly, after 12 kilometers. Despite this, we are very proud of her courage and perseverance anyway!

Aside from the many runners, Michiel, Jelle, Marieke, Tijs, Bart, Daniel, Willem and Daan were present at the exchange points for the relay marathon, greatly helping the organization to make this edition of the Marathon Eindhoven 2018 another great success with a touch of purple.

Utrechtse heuvelrugestafette

Sunday morning 8 die-hard Gauls left around 6 o’clock for Amersfoort, where they were going to participate in the Utrechtse heuvelrug relay race. This is a relay race in which 10x10km had to be run.

Around 8:20, Niek left in the freezing cold to start with his first 10km, accompanied by Daniel on a bike. They were both pleasantly surprised to find that the route was very clearly marked by yellow arrows on trees. However, when Niek almost ran 10k, he made a sharp bend and, to his surprise, saw that he was back at the location where he had started that morning. Apparently the arrows were a navigational aid for a different race, and the route he should have been running was not marked at all.

Luckily the organization was very friendly, and told us that Willem (who had to run the second part of the route) could start 30 minutes after Niek had finished. However, as the bike was still with Niek and Daniel located about 10km away, Willem did not have a navigator. Luckily enough, another group who was just passing by Willem had two cyclists, of which one was kind enough to escort Willem to the second switch point.

Niek, Daniel, and the bike were brought to the second switch point where Tom (accompanied by Frank) was about to leave for two stages. Willem had managed to close the half an hour gap, which meant that Tom and Frank could overtake a couple of competitors. However near the end of the fifth stage Frank suddenly stopped, after which Tom continued on his own bearing for the approximately last km. Apparently Frank had lost the chain of the bike (which he never recovered).

At the 4th switch point Niek and the others were informed by Frank about the broken-down bike, and while they were making alternative plans Tom suddenly arrived. Forcing Ramon to take-off without any company. Luckily enough he was able to chase another competitor, and at the 5th switching point Niek just barely managed to hand Ramon a map. Sadly enough Ramon got some cramps just after the switching point, and was forced to continue walking to the 6th switch point as he had no way to communicate with the others. Luckily he eventually arrived at the final switch point where a nice birthday song was sung for him (as it was his birthday).

At the 6th switching point Iris and Vera departed, who decided to run the 7th and the 8th stages together (keeping each other company). They had a map and a telephone which was constantly sharing their location to the others. They had a pleasant run and were spotted chatting at the 7th switch point by Willem, Frank and Tom.
At the 8th switch point, Daniel was overwhelmed by Iris and Vera suddenly showing up, as he was enjoying some coffee and apple pie. Because of the pie, he was fueled well and managed to overtake a couple of competitors in his stage. Due to his fast performance the gap with the competitor in front of him was reduced considerably. This meant that Frank could overtake this competitor in his final stage. However, when Frank was almost at the end, he got lost and ended up trespassing in a couple of gardens, after which he managed to get to the finish line by running over some random construction site.

Despite all the things that went wrong, the group managed to secure a steady 26th place. All participants got a couple of local speciality beers, as the race was organized by the ‘sixpack runners’. After which they went ahead and fueled themselves with a couple of pancakes in the best pancake house around Utrecht. All by all it was a successful day.
